Location: The Millers Way Project, Miller’s Way, Shepherds Bush, London, W6 7NH Time: 6-8pm Dates: Every Wednesday evening from October 26th to November 30th 2022 (6 week course) Ages: 12+ Equipment: None required, but loose clothing, like gym wear would be advised to wear for the whole course Prerequisite advice: It is advised that the participants watch the videos which are on; All of the weeks will be taught by Mir Ali, a lifelong martial artist and full time Acupuncturist who has been teaching martial arts and regular self defence seminars since the mid 1990’s. He holds regular private sessions for groups and individuals and has held self defence seminars open to the public in Shepherds Bush specifically for women and girls for the last two years. Week five of the course will be assisted by Melissa Ong and her husband Andrew Newstead, both of whom are martial arts instructors with years of experience teaching classes and seminars. Melissa Ong who is a solicitor and has previously worked with womens’ groups will present a short talk regarding the legalities of “fighting back” and will answer some questions before assisting with the rest of the evening’s course content. All of the weeks will be a mixture of presentation work, physical exercises by participants and breathing exercises. Participation by all attendees in all of the exercises is encouraged as this will allow them to experience in a safe environment how to respond to and be proactive in threatening and violent situations. By the very nature of self defence there will be physical contact between participants and also whilst using safety pads (which will be very controlled and measured between participants), but if for any reason anyone would rather not participate in any of the physical exercises, that will be accepted and not questioned. No experience is required to attend or participate in the course and all of the information and exercises has been tailored for beginners and those with very little or no experience of self defence. The minimum age has been set to twelve years old because the nature of some of the topics (such as rape, sexual harassment and sexual abuse) will be mentioned and possibly discussed.
